The Sand, Gravel, & Stone Calculator
estimate the total "tons" of material required for your job.

Estimate of Total Tons Required:

Enter the width, length, and thickness of your job, and click on whether you are measuring the depth in feet or inches.

Next, click on either SAND or STONE, or enter a custom density selection (Enter 3000 for gravel).

The SAND and STONE selections will fill in the density of the rock for you; the Custom selection allows you to enter a unique density in the Density field (Careful! If you click on Custom you need to write over the density that was there previously).

Finally, click on the Calculate button. The calculator will estimate the number of tons of material that will be required.

Please note that densities will vary somewhat between different loads, but the default values assigned for Sand and Stone should give you a good estimate.

The Landcape Calculator
estimate the total
"yards" of material required for your job.

Estimate of Total Yards Required:

Enter the width, length, and depth required, and click on whether you are measuring the depth in feet or inches.

Do not choose density as these materials have the same default values.  However if you are purchasing an unusual material and know that it has a different density the Custom selection  allows you to enter a unique factor in the Density field.

If you click on Custom you need to write over the factor that was there previously. Click on the Calculate  button.  The calculator will estimate the number of yards of landscape material that will be required.

Confused by the plug-in calculators?

Try using the traditional calculator above, and our simple instructions below to easily estimate the quantity of material you will need for your project. Use your mouse to click on the keys.

Mulches/Compost
1) Multiply the width of the area, times the length, times the depth* of the loam or mulch (your choice).
Now divide by 27 and your  answer is in cubic yards.
Sand for the Sandbox
1) Multiply the width of the box, times the length of the box, times the depth* of the sand.
Now divide by 20 and your  answer is in tons.
Gravel for driveways
1) Multiply the width of the driveway, times the length of the road, times the depth* of the sand
(2" is usually idea, 3" should be your maximum).
Now divide by  20. The answer is in tons.
Colored or Decorative Stone (for walks and borders)
1) Multiply the width of the area, times the length, times the depth* of the stone.
Now divide by 20. The answer is in tons.

*On the calculator express inches of depth as a percentage of a foot,
for example, 1" = .08, 2" = .17,  3" = .25,  4" = . 33,  5" = .42  and 6" = .50.
