Italian. Cerreto is 290 m. from sea level, its characteristics resemble that of a chessboard. Located on a hill whose sides are the affluent Turio and the Cappuccino of the Titerno from which it takes its name. ITS HISTORY It was reconstructed after a violent earthquake destroyed it in 1688. Several historical vicissitudes carried the Aragoneses below the earth. Cerreto, in fact is divided into the 'conte' of Maddaloni, Diamede Carafa. Many times it has been the residence of bishops, the 'citizen's the center of Episcopio since 1600. Reconstruction ended in 1696, the new Cerreto saw the revival of new handicraft activities, and has become universally famous, especially for its ceramics. In 1881, after it had been annexed to the province of Benevento, the Society of Mutual Aid was established between laborers and craftsmen, which is till has loyal activity. Currently, the 'citizen' accommodates various offices and the garrison hospital, "Maria of Thanks", with an annexed school for operating a sanitary "E" center of scholastic structures, which is the ancient grammar school gymnasium "Hard Luigi", the linguistic grammar school, a skill institute, the institute of art, and the commercial technical institute for geometricians. The new Cerreto reconstructed for the "duca" , the "Marzio Carafa.". was planed and realized following the outline of the famous quarter of Turin. Its structure has wide public squares and spaces render ease of movement for any events. ARTISTIC PATRIMONY Between the old ruins we find the ancient tower of the 'feudal age' and the reconstructed 'bridge of Hannibal from the 16th century. To the east and north edge of the "citizen", on the south is mount Angelo, a cliff in the shape of a seated lion, it is the "Leonessa", and there rests an ancient nail head of of aged 'lion' dedicated to the city's saint. Cerreto is the center of many churches between which are the Saint Maria of Thanks and the convent of the Cappuccini, it was built in 1583, in whose refectory if found six precious burlaps. Coming from Telese or San Lorenzello, there is situated the majestic cathedral to which they are annexed, the 'Episcopio' and the seminary. The church of the majestic Saint Martino is in the center of the country overlooking the public square below. The 'balustrades' are splendid, two straight, two cured ones.
